Why holidays matter in shipping

On a public holiday customs offices, terminals' gate services and trucking companies often work reduced hours or close. Containers discharged before a long weekend can sit uncleared and burn free time. Where a carrier's tariff or your contract counts free days as working days, weekends and public holidays are excluded — which moves the last free day, sometimes by a week around Easter, Christmas or Chinese New Year.

Holidays shown are nationwide public holidays from Nager.Date. Regional holidays and port-specific closures are not included — check with the terminal or your agent.
