Demurrage vs detention

What is demurrage?

A charge for a full container staying inside the port terminal after its free days run out. The clock usually starts when the container is discharged from the vessel and stops when it leaves the terminal (gate-out).

What is detention?

A charge for keeping the carrier's container outside the terminal (at your warehouse) beyond the free days. It usually runs from gate-out until the empty container is returned to the carrier's depot.

Are free days calendar days or working days?

Most carriers count calendar days, including weekends and public holidays, but some tariffs exclude them. Check the carrier's local D&D tariff for the port — or your contract, if you negotiated extra free time.

How do I avoid D&D charges?
