Questions
How do tropical storms affect shipping?
Ports close to cyclones suspend pilotage and berthing and send ships to sea; container lines skip calls or slow-steam around the storm. Expect delays of a few days for ships and cargo routed through the affected area, and terminal congestion once the port reopens.
What do the Green, Orange and Red alerts mean?
GDACS rates each storm by its expected humanitarian impact, combining wind strength with the population and infrastructure in its path. Red is the highest. A strong storm far out at sea can stay Green.
How are storms classified here?
By maximum sustained wind: under 34 knots a tropical depression, 34–63 knots a tropical storm, and 64 knots or more hurricane, typhoon or severe cyclone strength, graded category 1 to 5 on the Saffir–Simpson scale.
How often is the tracker updated?
Storm positions from GDACS are refreshed every 30 minutes.
