About the Suez Canal
The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and is the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe. Every ship that does not transit Suez on that trade has to sail around the Cape of Good Hope instead — thousands of extra miles and well over a week at sea.
Transits fall when Red Sea security deteriorates (as from late 2023, when attacks on shipping pushed most container lines around Africa) and when canal or weather incidents block the channel.
