How the calculation works
How is the sea distance calculated?
The route follows a network of real shipping lanes between the two ports — around continents and through canals such as Suez and Panama — rather than a straight line, so it is close to the distance a merchant ship actually sails.
How long does the voyage take?
Sailing time is distance divided by speed. Container ships typically sail at 14–20 knots, bulk carriers and tankers at 11–14 knots. Real transit times are longer: add port calls, transshipment, canal waiting time and weather. Carrier schedules for direct services are the best guide for a booking.
What is a nautical mile?
One nautical mile is 1.852 km (1.15 statute miles). Ship speed in knots is nautical miles per hour.
Can I track a shipment on this route?
Yes — Shyppy tracks ocean containers across 200+ carriers, air cargo across 200+ airlines and parcels across 1,500+ couriers, with the vessel's live position and alerts when the arrival date changes. Start free.
