What "for orders" means
A quick primer on spot-market tonnage and how this list is built.
What does "for orders" mean in shipping?
When a vessel's AIS destination reads "for orders" (or "FOR ORDERS", "TO ORDER", "AWAITING ORDERS"), the ship is sailing without a confirmed discharge port and is awaiting instructions from its charterer — common in the spot/tramp market, especially for tankers and bulk carriers.
Why do ships sail for orders?
Spot-market vessels are often chartered while already at sea, or a charterer delays nominating the final port for commercial reasons — waiting on a cargo sale, port availability, or better freight rates. Until orders arrive, the crew sets the destination to "for orders".
How often is this list updated?
It is compiled from live AIS static broadcasts worldwide and refreshed continuously; each vessel re-broadcasts its voyage data every few minutes. Ships drop off automatically once they receive orders or stop broadcasting.
Can I track a specific vessel or get alerts?
